why donate to mothers' milk bank

Mothers’ Milk Bank Needs Breastfeeding Mothers’ Help!
Many of our recipient families are so very thankful when we are able to provide the donated breast milk that is needed for their infants. These infants cannot ingest formulas without undue stress, pain, gastric upset and allergic reactions. They are thankful for the pasteurizing and testing of the volunteer mother’s breast milk to keep it safe and clean for their babies and as nutritious as possible. Many of these recipient mothers are desperately trying to breastfeed their babies with limited success due to physical ailments, surgery or chronic illnesses. The support these mothers get helps nourish their infants as well as supports the mom to continue her efforts in getting her breast milk supply to successfully increase for her babies.

Please see our Facebook page, www.facebook/mothersmilkbanksj.com for the stories of the families that we have served along with our other social media platforms (badges with links found above in header). Mothers’ Milk Bank continues to respond to a rising need and demand for donor human milk for infants to survive.

Storing and Shipping Breast Milk To store your breast milk, use clean techniques. HMBANA guidelines suggest:
  • Following the manufacturer’s directions to keep your breast pump clean and operational.
  • When you express your milk to donate, freeze the milk as soon as possible, date the container, and add your donor ID number to the outside of the container.
  • Use a breast milk bag or breast milk storage container. It must be sealed and frozen. Glass containers and plastic bottles are fine as long as they are cleaned after every use.
  • Your milk can be kept in a home freezer up to 4 months. It muct be less than 6 months old and deeply frozen (to deep freeze milk it must be kept in the back of freezer where its cold enough for ice cream to remain solid).

  • Sometimes mom's are unable to fulfill their desire to breastfeed even after a great deal of effort. Many vulnerable infants face medical risks and even life-threatening digestive conditions that can be addressed only with human milk.
Carefully screened and processed donor breast milk is endorsed by the Food and Drug Administration and the American Academy of Pediatrics as the safest, most nutritious choice.
Adherence to our screening procedures does NOT ensure that human milk from screened donors who share or sell their milk outside of the Mothers' Milk Bank is safe. This HMBANA bank processes milk beyond the initial screening procedure.
As the only nonprofit milk bank in California, we won’t sell your donated milk to pharmaceutical companies. We make sure that your milk feeds babies who are in need. That’s why we’re here.

Mission: Our mission is to enhance the availability and use of breast milk for all babies.

Vision: Our vision is for every infant in the world to receive the best possible start in life by breastfeeding or receiving donated human milk.

    Who do we serve?
Anyone who has a prescription from a licensed physician and a diagnosis of need can get access to donor milk. We follow HMBANA’s priority listing of conditions for availability . Our hope is to collect enough milk so all infants can get access to the donor milk.

Over 500,000 ounces distributed in 2016 to infants and children!
Mothers’ Milk Bank provides processed donated breast milk to 114 hospitals. At Mothers’ Milk Bank we continue to receive orders from more hospitals weekly. There is scientific evidence that breast milk and donor human milk is the optimal nutrition of choice for the most fragile and vulnerable infants in the NICU. Physicians are ordering donor human milk for infants who are in medical need in other hospital units as well as at discharge so they can be home with their families.
